First responder training, training and certifications, including laboratory experience for developing the First Aid (FA) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills required by public safety personnel, athletic trainers, emergency response team members, flight attendants, coaches, and nurses. Students who successfully pass all requirements will receive an American Red Cross (ARC) Certificate in Emergency Response, CPR for the professional rescuer, or both.

- Legal aspects of giving care, health and safety guidelines, roles and responsibilities of Emergency Medical System and First Responders, rescue moves, disease transmission certification, and proper disposal
- Body systems, checking a conscious and unconscious victim, recognizing life-threatening conditions, and automatic external defibrillator (AED) certification
- Recognizing breathing and cardiac emergencies for the adult, child, and infant; mannequin, oral and nasal airway, bag valve mask (BVM) and pocket mask, backboard, and C-collar skills
- CPR hands-on exam for certification
- Procedures for recognizing and caring for shock and bleeding
- Recognition and care for injuries to soft tissue, musculoskeletal system, and extremities
- Recognition and care for head, neck, back, chest, abdomen, and pelvis
- Recognition and care for sudden illnesses, poisoning, bites and stings, heat and cold related emergencies, and childbirth

3. Course Measurable Objectives:

(Measurable course objectives should identify expected outcomes: specific, observable student actions – what the student should be able to do, know or feel as a result of taking this course.  A majority of objectives should reflect critical thinking, i.e. application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.  Course objectives should relate directly to methods of evaluation)

1. Compare and contrast the difference between manual compressions and using an automated external defibrillator (AED).
2. Perform with competency, the techniques used for immobilization.
3. Identify and analyze the different body systems.
4. Recognize scenarios that require CPR and First Aid skills.
5. Assess the signs and symptoms of various life-threatening conditions and demonstrate the appropriate actions to provide care.
6. Identify skills necessary for certification in American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response.

4. Course Methods of Evaluation:

(Methods of evaluation should relate directly to measurable course objectives.  They indicate the kind of assignments or performance activities designed for a course to assess student learning.  Each course must list either substantial writing assignments (category 1) OR computational / non-computational problem solving demonstrations (category 2) if writing assignments are inappropriate (with an explanation of why substantial writing is not appropriate for the course).  Activities typically assigned in categories 3 and 4 must also be listed in this section.)

Category 1. Substantial written assignments for this course include:

One 3- to 5-page paper on earthquake survival assessment and fire safety plan

One 3- to 5-page paper on skills necessary for certification in ARC Emergency Medical Response

One 3-page paper on the difference between manual compressions and using AED

5. Sample Assignments:

(Assignments should be directly related to the objectives of the course.  They should be specific enough to provide real guidance to faculty and clear expectations for students.  Descriptions of the type or examples of assignments are required.  For example, rather than “term paper” state “term paper comparing and contrasting the social aspects of hunting tactics of two mammal species.”  This section must establish that the work is demanding enough in rigor and independence to fulfill the credit level specified.  The nature of the assignments must clearly demand critical thinking.  Assignments should be adequate to assure that students who successfully complete them can meet the objectives of the course.  Appropriate out-of-class work is required for credit courses.)

Provide a minimum of three (3) sample assignments:

1. Demonstrate the proper technique in applying and using the Automated External Defibrillators (AED) on the mannequin.
2. Create in writing, scenarios that require: (a) CPR-related skills and (b) first aid-related skills.
3. Upon completion of a written scenario, be prepared to perform the skill associated with the scenario.
4. Write a one-page paper describing the characteristics of a Fire Safety Plan.
