3. Course Measurable Objectives:

(Measurable course objectives should identify expected outcomes: specific, observable student actions – what the student should be able to do, know or feel as a result of taking this course.  A majority of objectives should reflect critical thinking, i.e. application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.  Course objectives should relate directly to methods of evaluation)

Provide a minimum of five (5) course measurable objectives:

1. Explain the mechanisms of cellular, cardiopulmonary, neuromuscular, sensory, digestive, renal, and reproductive physiology, and the regulation of these mechanisms.
2. Describe key interactions between organ systems, including acid and base regulation, fluid balance, and metabolic regulation.
3. Apply tools of the scientific method including data acquisition (conventional and computerized), simple statistical analysis, and presentation of data to reporting of data collected in laboratory activities.
4. Make predictions and draw conclusions which demonstrate physiological principles of physical transport, bioenergetics, hemodynamics, cardiovascular and respiratory dynamics, digestive enzyme kinetics, and renal function.
5. Predict changes in normal physiological pathways that occur in common pathologies.
6. Predict the outcomes of laboratory exercises according to concepts, principles, and laws discussed in the course.


4. Course Methods of Evaluation:

(Methods of evaluation should relate directly to measurable course objectives.  They indicate the kind of assignments or performance activities designed for a course to assess student learning.  Each course must list either substantial writing assignments (category 1) OR computational / non-computational problem solving demonstrations (category 2) if writing assignments are inappropriate (with an explanation of why substantial writing is not appropriate for the course).  Activities typically assigned in categories 3 and 4 must also be listed in this section.)

Category 1. Substantial written assignments for this course include:

Short answer questions of 4- to 5-sentences on weekly lab data reports on physical transport, bioenergetics, hemodynamics, cardiovascular and respiratory dynamics, digestive enzyme kinetics, and renal function

7- to 10-page written formal lab report summarizing and interpreting data with the use of tables or graphs

One-paragraph essay questions included on each lecture exam and comprehensive final on the mechanisms of cellular, cardiopulmonary, neuromuscular, sensory, digestive, renal and reproductive physiology, and the regulation of these mechanisms

5. Sample Assignments:

(Assignments should be directly related to the objectives of the course.  They should be specific enough to provide real guidance to faculty and clear expectations for students.  Descriptions of the type or examples of assignments are required.  For example, rather than “term paper” state “term paper comparing and contrasting the social aspects of hunting tactics of two mammal species.”  This section must establish that the work is demanding enough in rigor and independence to fulfill the credit level specified.  The nature of the assignments must clearly demand critical thinking.  Assignments should be adequate to assure that students who successfully complete them can meet the objectives of the course.  Appropriate out-of-class work is required for credit courses.)

Provide a minimum of three (3) sample assignments:

1. Record results of laboratory exercises, analyze data collected, and critique laboratory protocols, answering 5 - 10 questions related to methodology, population statistics, and physiological concepts.
2. Analyze an ECG recording by 1.) measurement of standard wave, segment, and interval duration; 2.) measurement of the PQRST wave amplitudes; 3.) graphical calculation of the mean electrical axis of the heart by plotting the vectors of bipolar limb leads; and 4.) health inferences based on normal wave, segment, interval, and axis measurements.
3. Perform an analysis of class results of red blood cells (RBC) size and cheek cell size, applying the Student's t-test to determine whether or not a statistically significant difference exists between the size of the two cell types.
4. Graph exercises designed to introduce the student to various forms of graphing and interpretation of graphical data (x-y graphs with 2 to 3 curves, ECG vectorgram). Students must construct each graph correctly then draw sound conclusions about the data shown on the graph.
5. A formal typed scientific report, including introduction, materials and procedures, results, and discussion sections. Formal reports on any of the following laboratory exercises are assigned: muscle physiology, blood analysis, ECG, blood pressure, or respiratory analysis. Students must apply the scientific method to data collected, must present analysis of the data (graphical and statistical) and must indicate understanding of population established normal values. As part of the report requirements, student must research current scientific literature to obtain background information and broaden their conclusions regarding the outcome of these exercises. A bibliography is required.
